Ozone lighting provides important germicidal properties to many disinfection applications, with UV ozone light at 185nm proven to provide effective oxidation with many benefits.
UV Ozone Light at 185nm
Ultraviolet (UV) light is electromagnetic radiation that has a higher frequency (shorter wavelengths) than visible light. White, visible light is actually made up of a rainbow of colors, with violet being the highest frequency, closest to UV light. UV light has even higher frequencies, thus beyond violet, or ultraviolet, which is typically defined as electromagnetic radiation in the range of 100 to 380 nanometers (nm).
Germicidal lamps are typically designed to emit wavelengths that kill bacteria, viruses, and other harmful microorganisms. Our lamps produce photons at 254 nm, which has been found to be one of the more effective wavelengths at achieving disinfection. Ozone light bulbs are designed to emit UV radiation in the range of 185nm. Ozone is created by a reaction called photolysis of an Oxygen molecule, O2. Ozone lighting produces radiation in the range of 185 nm and less than 220 nm. 185nm photons break O2 apart, which creates singlet oxygen molecules. Those immediately bind with other available oxygen to create O3 (ozone).
Ozone Lighting Benefits
Ozone light bulbs provide germicidal benefits and also eliminate contaminants and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in the air, such as sulfides, ammonia, and mercaptans. Air purification systems that feature UVC germicidal lamps at 254 nm to eliminate viruses and bacteria upon exposure can also be combined with ozone light bulbs for additional deodorizing properties.
One of the greatest benefits of ozone lighting is that it is carried through the air into places where direct exposure to UV germicidal lamps would not be possible. UV ozone light is used in many heating, cooling, and ventilation (HVAC) systems to effectively clean and disinfect the air.
Another benefit of ozone lighting is recognized in water disinfection applications. 185nm ozone lamps are proven to provide effective protection against viruses and bacteria over a wide range of pH environments, including water. The strong oxidizing power of ozone can eliminate many protozoa and water that chlorine does not, such as Cryptosporidium and Giardia.
Ozone oxidation is an excellent disinfection method for water treatment systems and many water disinfection and purification applications. Ozone disinfection can be useful in aquaculture, pools and spas, wastewater, water treatment systems, water reclamation, life sciences, and ballast water treatment systems for ships.
LightSources: Experienced Ozone Light Bulb Supplier
LightSources is a leading global UV lamp manufacturer offering a wide range of standard UV lamp solutions, custom design solutions, UVC germicidal lamps, and UV ozone light bulbs. Our 185 nm UV ozone lamps are designed, engineered, and manufactured with high-quality quartz glass, made of either fused quartz or soda lime glass, as opposed to typical fluorescent lamps, which are usually made of borosilicate glass.
We offer a variety of ozone lighting solutions, including low-pressure and medium-pressure germicidal lamps as well as low-pressure amalgam lamps. Medium-pressure Mercury discharge lamps appear to be quite similar to high-intensity discharge (HID) lamps and produce UVC radiation in a broad band instead of a single, narrow band line.
Low-pressure Amalgam UV lamps are the choice for long-term applications or stable performance over a wide variant of ambient temperature changes as required. LightSources offers Amalgam lamps with spot and pellet amalgam technology that provide benefits over other types of lamps in the right environment.
